First Time Cannabis Buyers Guide
A tourist’s guide to walking in, buying legally, and not overthinking it.
Is it actually legal?
Yes — California legalized recreational cannabis for adults 21+ back in 2018, and San Francisco has a thriving, well-regulated market of licensed dispensaries. You don’t need to be a California resident to buy. You just need to be 21 or older with a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID.
✓ Driver’s license or passport both work fine at the door — no exceptions, even if you look 40.
BEFORE YOU GO
What to bring
→ A valid photo ID. Non-negotiable.
→ Cash or a debit card — many shops are cash-preferred due to federal banking restrictions, though most now have an ATM on-site or accept debit workarounds.
→ Zero expectations of rushing. Good shops want you to ask questions.
WHAT HAPPENS INSIDE
Walking in for the first time
SF dispensaries operate more like upscale boutiques than the stereotypical head shop. You’ll check in with ID at the door, then browse a counter or menu board with a budtender — staff trained to walk you through strains, potency, and consumption methods based on what you actually want: relaxation, energy, sleep, or just a good night out.
If you’re new, just say so. Budtenders would rather set a first-timer up with a light dose than watch someone overdo it.

Van Ness — walkable from Nob Hill, Russian Hill, and Pacific Heights, and close enough to the Embarcadero and Fisherman’s Wharf to fold into a day of sightseeing. Right next to Shanghai Kelly’s, a short walk from House of Prime Rib, so it’s easy to fold into a night out.
BEFORE YOU BUY
Five tips for your first purchase
- Start low
Trying edibles? 5mg of THC is a reasonable starting dose. You can always take more later — you can’t undo too much. Ask about effects, not names - Ask about effects, not names
“I want something relaxing but not sleepy” tells a budtender more than picking a strain because the name sounds cool. - Know where you can consume
No smoking or vaping in most public spaces, parks, or federal land — including the Golden Gate Bridge area. Most hotels ban it too, so check first or ask about consumption lounges. - Don’t drive after
Rideshare or walk. San Francisco is very walkable, and Ubers/Lyfts are everywhere. - Keep it in original packaging
Hang onto your receipt and keep product in its original container while you’re out and about.
Buying weed in San Francisco as a tourist is simple, legal, and — at the right dispensary — genuinely fun.
Always confirm hours and ID requirements before you go. Consume responsibly. 21+ only.
